Propecia (Finasteride)
Propecia (finasteride) is used to treat standard male pattern hair loss which occurs on the scalp, usually in the pattern of a receding hairline or bald spot on the crown of the head. Propecia works by inhibiting the enzymes that are responsible for producing 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) – a biochemical thought to be responsible for hair loss in genetically susceptible men.
Propecia performed exceedingly well in studies of five years or more. During these studies, many the men on Propecia expressed increased satisfaction with their hair growth and had substantial hair re-growth or continued to maintain their original hair count compared to the men on placebo who continued to lose their hair. In fact, most (65%) of men treated with Propecia at year 5 had increased hair count, while all the men in the placebo group lost hair.
Propecia is approved for the treatment of male pattern hair loss in men ages 18 to 41. Safety in men outside these age ranges has not been studied. Women should not take nor handle Propecia tablets, especially if they have the potential for childbearing, as serious birth defects may result. Propecia is metabolized in the liver so those with decreased liver function should avoid taking Propecia. Do not take Propecia if you have ever experienced an allergic reaction to any of the components of this medication. You should consult your physician about your entire medical history and current medications prior to taking Propecia to avoid any potential complications or interactions.
In clinical studies, most men on Propecia did not experience side effects. In less than 2% of those on Propecia, sexual side effects including decreased desire, difficulty achieving erection and decreased semen production did occur. These side effects disappeared when Propecia was stopped and in many cases also went away in those who continued to take Propecia. Other rare side effects of Propecia may include: allergic reaction (including swelling of the lips or face and difficulty breathing), breast tenderness or enlargement and testicular pain. Contact your physician immediately if you develop facial swelling or difficulty breathing; or if you develop lumps, pain or nipple discharge in the breasts/pectoral area.
Typically 1mg of Propecia is taken daily. It may take up to three months before benefits of treatment begin to be noticed. If Propecia treatment is stopped, the benefits will reverse within 12 months of the cessation.
Propecia cannot replace all the hair lost but it can reduce the further loss of hair and stimulate some re-growth to help you achieve a fuller head of hair. If you fail to see the results you expect after three months of treatment, speak with your physician.
